It’s a common type of question that we get. As is so often the case, the answer is “It depends.” Your best bet is to book a free appointment so one of our sales reps can see what you have in mind, look at your property, and go over the possibilities.
We definitely do custom work and our rep will give you all the details you need for your particular project. But generally speaking, here are a few factors to keep in mind.
Canada’s Winters
If you see a fence in a brochure from Texas or California it might be difficult for us to match here because we have to think about our harsh winters in our designs. An example might be larger post spacing (greater than eight feet) for more decorative fences. It’s something we can only assess on a case by case basis.
Local By-Laws
Similarly, the rules and regs in our jurisdiction might be different from those where your dream fence is located. In Gatineau, for instance, a backyard fence can’t be more than six feet high. There are fences we’ve built in Ottawa that we wouldn’t be able to install for our friends in Quebec because of restrictions like this.
Is it similar to a fence we offer?
The talent and equipment in our shop are second to none and we enjoy a challenge. That said, if your ideal fence is similar to one in our catalogue we’ll have the jigs and templates all ready to go. Our state of the art routing tables are fully programmable from scratch but it’s always more cost effective to use or modify an established design.
Custom work based on our existing designs has a better chance of getting the go-ahead from our operations manager. Shown here is a Billings with a custom double scallop.
The bottom line:
We can and do do custom work but we have to assess each project on a case by case basis. If it’s something similar to one of our catalogue models the chances of getting a green light from our operations manager are better. Booking a free appointment with one of our sales reps is the best way to start.
