Some folks wonder if it’s considered rude or unfriendly to put up a privacy fence. The answer is no. Privacy fences are extremely common, especially if there’s a pool, deck, or other feature that encourages a lot of activity in the backyard.
If there’s a history
Sometimes the desire for a privacy fence stems from a contentious history with the neighbours. If this is the case we suggest talking with them about your intentions beforehand. Note there is no legal requirement to do so if you’re building the fence inside your property line. But in our experience the waters usually stay calmer when there are no surprises and everyone knows what to expect. And you never know: your neighbour might agree to pay half.
