A self closing gate is a gate that automatically swings shut after being opened. This feature is particularly important in situations where leaving a gate open could pose a safety risk—like around pools (as required by local bylaws in Canada), or in areas where pets or children could wander.
Self closing gates are not just for safety—they also very convenient and improve the flow of movement in busy areas.
How Do They Work?
Most of our jobs use hinges with a spring assembly that are called auto closures. When the gate is opened, a spring is compressed or twisted, storing energy. For wood fences, the spring is usually separate from the hinge, but the principle remains the same. Once released, the spring returns to its neutral position, swinging the gate closed. They work great for residential gates and pool enclosures, and there are heavier duty versions for more commercial applications.

A stainless steel vinyl hinge with the spring mechanism. Although it looks different from the chain link auto closure shown at the top, the principle is the same.
For more elaborate commercial jobs, like slide gates or large overheads entire operator system can be installed to ensure the whole project is safe and traffic flows smoothly. These are typically powered electrically, and come with many customizable options.
