Chain link is a popular fence choice due to its affordability and low maintenance requirements. Like with any fencing material, however, there are both pros and cons to consider before making a final decision.
Pros
Inexpensive: Chain link fences are one of the most affordable fencing options available, making them a popular choice for those on a budget. Installation is usually fairly easy, and the materials are quite common.
Unobtrusive: Chain link fences are see-through, making them a great choice for properties where visibility is important. They blend in well with landscape features like hedges and keep sight lines free for pools and play areas.
Low maintenance: Chain link fences require very little maintenance. They do not need to be painted, stained, or sealed, and can be easily cleaned with a hose and some soap.
Cons
No privacy: One of the biggest drawbacks of chain link fences is that they offer little to no privacy. The open weave design of the fence lets anyone see through it, making it unsuitable for those who want to keep their property hidden from view. Privacy slats are available, but they generally require an upgrade to the posts and the look will never be as pleasing as a full privacy wood or vinyl fence.
Limited options for customization: Chain link fences are not very customizable, as they only come in a few different sizes and gauges. This can be limiting for those who want a more personal vision for their property.
Limited color options: While the posts and framework can be custom-colored, the mesh itself is only available in black, brown, green, or white.
Not as strong as other fences: While chain link fences are durable and long-lasting, they are not as strong as other fencing options. The warranty for chain link is five years. In comparison, vinyl fences carry a coveted lifetime warranty.
