The beautiful Bridgeport shown above is one example of our non-white vinyl fences. Occasionally folks ask why we don’t carry black or very dark vinyl/PVC fences. Simply put, they don’t age well because of technical issues.

The Problem with Dark Vinyl Fences

  1. UV Exposure Causes Fading
Vinyl fencing is designed to withstand harsh weather conditions, but dark colours, especially black, absorb more UV radiation than lighter shades. Over time, exposure to the sun causes these colours to fade, leading to an uneven, washed-out appearance. Unlike wood, which can be repainted or stained, vinyl is a permanent material—once it fades, there’s no easy way to restore the original colour.
  2. Heat Absorption Leads to Warping
Darker materials absorb more heat, and this is particularly problematic for vinyl. When exposed to high temperatures, dark vinyl fences can become soft, pliable, and more prone to warping. This can lead to structural instability, with panels bowing or even popping out of place. White and lighter shades, by contrast, reflect more sunlight and stay cooler, maintaining their shape and integrity over time.
  3. Surface Damage is More Noticeable
Scratches, scuffs, and normal wear-and-tear stand out more on dark vinyl compared to lighter shades. Over time, this can make the fence look worn and unattractive, even if it’s structurally sound.

Are the Problems Unsolvable?

Some manufacturers offer black or dark-coloured vinyl fences with additional UV inhibitors or coatings designed to slow the fading process. As yet, we don’t feel comfortable enough with them to include them in our product line. But we always monitor our supply chains with an eye towards new developments and improvements, and that assessment could change in the future.

The vinyl wall is a great alternative to dark vinyl fences. The vinyl fill is set on an iron frame and mimics the colour and texture of wood.
