Mold and mildew can quickly make even the best of fences look old and neglected. Fortunately, cleaning it up is easier than you might think!

A Cautionary Note

  • The instructions below are for wood fences only. Improper cleaning can void the warranties for other materials like iron and vinyl.
  • Before applying any cleaning substance to your wood fence, try it on a small patch or single board and wait a day to evaluate the effect.

Attacking Mold and Mildew

The best way to remove mold or mildew from a fence is to start with a simple cleaning solution: mix one part white vinegar with three parts water. Apply it generously using a spray bottle or sponge, let it sit for about 15–20 minutes, then scrub the surface with a stiff brush. For tougher spots, you can use a mixture of water and oxygen bleach (never regular bleach if you have plants nearby, as it can harm them).

wire brush

A wire brush is a great cleaning tool when working with wood.

After scrubbing, rinse the fence thoroughly with a garden hose. If you’re dealing with large areas or stubborn buildup, a pressure washer on a low setting can make the job quicker—just be careful not to damage the wood or finish.

Once clean, consider sealing or staining the fence to help prevent future mold growth. Regular maintenance, like keeping nearby plants trimmed and clearing away debris, will also go a long way.

A little effort now will keep your fence looking fresh for years to come!
