Hi, I’m Andrea from Fence-All.
A question that I’ve received from some of our customers is:
“Should my newly installed vinyl/PVC fence be shaking and moving so much in the wind?”
The answer is yes! You do not want an overly rigid vinyl fence. If there are really strong winds, a rigid fence could snap. vinyl is plastic, so it’s designed to have a little bit of flexibility. You actually want the fence to have a bit of a wave during high winds; otherwise, as I mentioned, it could snap.
A couple of years ago, the City of Ottawa experienced some severe windstorms, and even a tornado. During that time, many wood fences didn’t hold up, particularly older ones. However, our vinyl fences, which come with a lifetime warranty, had very few warranty claims after those windstorms and the tornado. This is due to the way we install our fences and their built-in flexibility.
For the warranty claims we did receive, none were because the fences snapped in the wind. That was never an issue. However, we did receive a lot of business from people whose fences, installed by other companies or made from a different vinyl product, did not hold up in the wind and did snap.
So, the answer is yes, you want your vinyl fence to have some flexibility. It’s supposed to move a little to avoid snapping or having other issues. Plus, since vinyl comes with a lifetime warranty, if it’s shaky, that’s fine—it’s how it’s meant to be installed. And we stand behind our work.
We will take care of your fence for as long as you own your home. If you ever have any concerns or questions, feel free to reach out, and we’ll be happy to help!
