It’s well understood that residential fences in Ottawa don’t require a permit. We often get asked if the same applies to commercial fencing.
The answer
Commercial fences do not require a building permit (source: City of Ottawa). They’re subject to the same rules as residential fences in By-law No. 2003-462 with one difference: commercial fences can be a maximum of 3 metres high (the maximum for residential fences is 2.13 metres).
The exception
A building permit is required if the fence surrounds a pool. In this respect residential and non-residential fences are the same. Both must adhere to the Ottawa Pool Enclosure By-law (No. 2013-39).

All enclosures around pools require a building permit.
