Folks often wonder if they can save on materials by re-purposing an existing panel. As is so often the case, the answer is “it depends.”
At Fence-All
At Fence-All we build all of our gates from new material, so this type of project isn’t available. Quality control is a big deal with us: we take a lot of time to source our materials and we’re constantly looking for ways to improve. Experience has taught us that work with secondhand materials can lead to misguided expectations and sub-par installations.
Elsewhere
Some big-box department stores offer kits that can be used to convert an existing panel into a gate, and there are many “How tos” online that give instructions on how to get the job done. It’s a project that any handyman with a few basic tools will be able to complete.
It’s a good DIY project
The bottom line
We don’t convert existing fence panels into gates. It can be done, however, and done well. If you’re a Do-It-Yourself-er it can be a rewarding project of moderate difficulty. If you’re not, a handyman for hire in your neighbourhood is a good alternative.
