Galvanized wire has long been a favourite for industrial applications. It starts with high tensile wire that is bathed in rust resistant zinc. More zinc does increase the cost, but it also means better long term protection against corrosion.
0.3 oz/sq. ft. = Standard for Residential
1.2 oz/sq. ft. = Standard for Industrial
1.6 oz/sq. ft. = Heavy Protection for Industrial
2.0 oz/sq. ft. = Extra Heavy Protection for Industrial
Vinyl covered wire starts with the same galvanized core wire but it is then covered with an attractive maintenance-free thick vinyl coating. The vinyl is offered in a choice of colours, it’s impervious to rust or corrosion, and it’s guaranteed against cracking, splitting, or decaying.
Aluminum wire provides better protection than galvanizing (even if the galvanized wire is vinyl covered) in salty air conditions typical of coastal areas. It’s also much lighter which can be advantageous for certain applications (e.g., large gates).
